Mike Coolbaugh had just embarked on a new career as a minor league hitting coach for the Tulsa Drillers when he was fatally struck by a foul ball while coaching first base on July 22, 2007. The ball, which is estimated to have been traveling over 100 mph, killed Coolbaugh on impact, making him the only coach to ever die on the field in the history of baseball. Mike, who was only 35 years old, left behind 2 young sons and a wife who was six months pregnant with the couple's first daughter. Friends and family have organized this annual golf tournament as a "Celebration of Life" to remember and honor the amazing man that Mike was. While Mike's life ended on the baseball field, his legacy has only just begun. In the days, weeks, months and eventually years that have passed, Mike's widow Mandy continues to receive countless calls and letters describing Mike's exemplary life of Christian values, shared memories of his laughter and passion for life, and commitment to living each day for others and to the fullest. Mike's ideals continue to inspire people and this tournament is a testament to his young children of the lovable man that Mike was. This tournament has been designed to help Mandy offset the costs of unexpectedly raising a family on her own and to help other families in similar situations. Mandy hopes to extend the program that the Coolbaugh Memorial Tournament has initiated and continue to work with bereavement channels to support young widows and their families and their broader needs. Please join us to help support this heartfelt mission.
